Positive: The property was very unique and secluded, a perfect getaway for a couple visiting Aotearoa for the first time together. I loved the uniqueness of staying in the bus, and the location away from town nestled in the mountains near the ocean. There was a spectacular view of the sea, and at night so many stars were visible, including the milky way. We enjoyed the outdoor tub both nights we were there, finding it a great way to warm up in mid winter. The fire pit was also a nice touch, and although we couldn't quite get the fire going, we had fun eating on the deck listening to the quiet sounds of nature. The hosts sent detailed instructions helping us find the somewhat out-of-the-way property. The bus was stocked with a gas stove, kettle, solar powered refrigerator, a nice shower, bbq, a warm bed, toiletries, towels, tea, coffee and sugar. All in all we loved staying there, it was very tranquil, unique, and relaxing.
Negative: As I mentioned, we had no trouble finding the property due to the detailed instructions sent by the hosts, but it was a bit nerve-wracking actually getting there. The property was down a long, windy, narrow dirt road with no lights, and the driveway itself was VERY steep and only paved in a small section (the steepest part). We made it alright in our rental Hyundai i30, but we were blessed with clear weather for the two days we were there. There were a few potholes in the unpaved sections of road and driveway, and I feel it may have been trickier if it had been wet. Going very slowly helped a lot. Also, the township of Raglan is about a 20minute drive from the property, and due to the above, we tried to minimise our trips out and back, so I reccommend having dinner in town BEFORE checking in, or bringing your own food to cook. The bus got very cold at night, as there was only a diesel heater that had to be turned off at night and the bus was not very well insulated. It was absolutely fine during the day as it caught the sun and retained heat well. The bed was very warm with two thick doonas and blankets to spare, and I am a hot sleeper so I didn't mind the chilly air, but my partner has asthma and her lungs struggled a little. Once again, I think this would not be a problem at all during summer. Finally, there was only one place to charge phones, a plug that had to be shared with the minifridge/chilly bin/powered esky. The fridge has to be turned off at night so phones could be charged then, but we had two phones and often ended up charging in the car. This is another thing that could be helped by planning ahead and bringing power banks. All in all, if you treat this more as a camping trip than a hotel experience, I think you will be very satisfied.
Summary: Wonderful little wilderness getaway
